Spalted Beech Mallet
The spalted beech mallet is a celebration of the striking irregularities that can be found in wood grain. A friend to the kitchen or workshop, and worthy of a mantle, these mallets can be put on display or put to use.
Spalting found on the mallet head is a kind of wood colouration caused by the presence of fungi. Left too long, a piece may rot and fall apart. Caught early, dried and protected, these distinctive patterns have long been sought after by woodworkers.
Each mallet is constructed using two sections of tree: stem and branch. To fully exploit the strength of round wood, each is used near to its original form. Pieces have had their bark removed before being rounded off with a handplane, drilled, jointed and sanded.
Beech wood was sourced from Haliburton Forest, a sustainably managed forest in Ontario, and a collaborator of the Using Trees Studio.
DIMENSIONS: Measurements of each mallet are unique. Small Heads are approximately 55 x 115 mm. Regular Heads are approximately 70 x 135 mm. The Axe Style Head is non-circular, but similar in size to the Regular.
CARE: Use over time will mark the mallet’s ends. Treated well in use, the mallet will last a long time. If wood becomes dry, apply a light coat of olive oil, cutting board oil or similar product.
