Cherry Storywood
You can read a lot into the grain of a piece of wood. Layered on year by year, we are treated to a detailed record of when branches began to grow, how the sun shone and rain fell, what hardships the tree encountered, and how long it lived.
Storywood is a series of tactile sculptural forms made from characterful wood in the Using Trees collection. Each piece is cut to length, hand-planed, and finely sanded to be touched and lived with over time.
This Cherry Storywood was salvaged from a barn in the Rouge River area. A dramatic contrast between deep heartwood and pale sapwood creates its striking colour variation.
Looking closely at the grain reveals its particular growth story: multiple branches that, over time, pressed together and unified into a single form. Their growth rings radiate outward from several centres rather than one.
